Kitchens are the job most likely to blow a budget, because the decisions compound. Here's how we scope them and what each tier actually costs.

Cabinets are typically 35–45% of a kitchen budget, which is why refacing exists and why it's worth considering seriously. If your cabinet boxes are solid plywood and the layout works, refacing gets you 80% of the visual result for roughly 40% of the cost. If they're particleboard and sagging — common in Pinellas homes built in the 70s and 80s — replacement is the honest answer and we'll say so.

Removing a wall: what it really involves

Half the kitchen enquiries we get start with "can we open up this wall." Sometimes yes, and it transforms the house. The honest checklist:

  • Is it load-bearing? If it is, you need an engineered beam, a permit, and inspection. Budget $4,000–$9,000 for the structural work alone, on top of the kitchen.
  • What's inside it? Plumbing stacks, HVAC returns and electrical all have to go somewhere. Rerouting a duct is often the sneakiest cost in the whole job.
  • What happens to the ceiling and floor? The scar line where the wall was needs drywall, and the flooring underneath needs patching or replacing across both rooms.

We'll tell you which of these apply before you fall in love with the idea.

Countertops, honestly

Quartz has become the default for good reason — it's non-porous, needs no sealing, and handles Florida humidity without complaint. Granite is often cheaper now than quartz and perfectly good, but it wants resealing every year or two. Butcher block looks superb and is a poor choice next to a sink in this climate unless you're committed to oiling it.

Template happens after cabinets are installed, and fabrication takes 7–14 days. That gap is normal and we plan the rest of the work around it, so you're not without a sink for two weeks.

Kitchen Remodeling — Common Questions

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in Pinellas County?

A cabinet-and-countertop refresh runs $12,000 to $22,000. A full replacement keeping the same layout runs $25,000 to $45,000. Moving walls, plumbing or adding an island puts you at $45,000 to $80,000 or more.

How long will I be without a kitchen?

Two to three weeks for a refresh, four to six weeks for a full replacement, and six to ten weeks for a reconfiguration. We stage the work so the sink and one run of counter come back online as early as possible.

Is cabinet refacing worth it?

If your cabinet boxes are solid plywood and the layout already works, yes — refacing gets roughly 80% of the visual result for about 40% of the cost of replacement. If the boxes are particleboard and sagging, replace them; refacing a failing box is money wasted.

Do I need a permit for a kitchen remodel in St. Petersburg?

Cabinets, countertops, tiling and painting are permit-exempt. You need a permit for electrical work, moving plumbing, replacing a water heater, or altering a load-bearing wall. Any work valued at $1,000 or more requires a licensed contractor regardless of permit status.

Can you remove the wall between my kitchen and living room?

Usually, but the cost depends entirely on whether it's load-bearing and what runs inside it. A load-bearing removal needs an engineered beam, permit and inspection — budget $4,000 to $9,000 on top of the kitchen. We check before you commit.
