What custom carpentry costs, and why it is quoted per project
Custom carpentry is quoted per project rather than by the square foot, because the work is defined by your walls rather than by a catalogue. Built-in shelving, closet systems, trim and millwork, cabinet modifications and bench seating are all built on site to fit the space that actually exists.
The two things that move the price are paint-grade versus stain-grade, and how true the room is. Paint-grade uses poplar or MDF and forgiving joinery, because paint hides a lot. Stain-grade uses hardwood with matched grain and every joint visible, which is materially more material and more hours. Old Florida houses are also rarely square, and a built-in that looks like it grew there is one that was scribed to a wall that is out by half an inch.

How we price this
We do not publish a range for carpentry, because a bookcase and a whole-house trim package are not the same product and any single number would mislead you. What we do commit to: a free measure and design visit, and a fixed written price before work starts — not an hourly estimate that moves.

We come out, measure the actual opening, and sketch what will fit. Rooms are rarely square and the drawing has to start from what is there.
2. A fixed written price
One number, itemised, with the material grade stated. Paint-grade and stain-grade are priced separately so you can see the difference.
3. Built on site, scribed to your walls
Fitted to the wall you have rather than the wall the plan assumed. That fit is the whole difference between a built-in and a bookcase pushed against a wall.
The questions people actually ask us
Why not just buy flat-pack and have someone fit it?
Sometimes you should, and we will say so. If the opening is a standard size, the walls are true, and you want storage rather than a feature, a good flat-pack system fitted properly is excellent value and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Custom earns its money in the awkward cases: an alcove that is not square, a sloped ceiling, a wall with a service run in it, a depth no manufacturer offers, or a finish that has to match existing trim. That is where flat-pack ends up with filler strips and a gap at the top.
What is the difference between paint-grade and stain-grade?
Paint-grade is built from poplar, MDF or a mix, and finished opaque. Joints can be filled, grain does not need to match, and the result is clean and considerably cheaper.
Stain-grade is hardwood with grain and colour matched across every visible face, and every joint stays visible forever. It is more material, more selection, and more hours. Neither is better — but choosing stain-grade and budgeting paint-grade is the most common way this conversation goes wrong.
Will it look built-in or bolted-on?
That depends entirely on scribing and trim, which is most of what you are paying for. A built-in reads as part of the house when its edges die into the walls with no gap and its trim profile matches the room’s existing trim.
We match the existing profile where there is one. Where the house has no consistent trim, we will suggest one and show it to you before it goes on the wall.
Do I need a permit for built-ins?
Generally no. Cabinetry, shelving, trim and millwork are finish work and are exempt in St. Petersburg and most Pinellas jurisdictions.
You do need one if we are altering framing, touching a load-bearing wall, or adding electrical — lighting inside a built-in, or an outlet in a window seat, crosses that line. We will tell you at the quote, not halfway through.
