Four to seven weeks from signed quote to final walkthrough for a standard full bath, of which only two to five weeks is construction. The rest is selections and permitting, and those are the two stages homeowners can genuinely shorten.
Where the time actually goes
- Design and selections — 1 to 3 weeks. Tile, vanity, fixtures, glass. This is entirely in your control and it is where most projects lose time.
- Permitting — 2 to 4 weeks when a permit is required. Runs in parallel with selections if the scope is settled early.
- Construction — 2 to 5 weeks. Demolition and rough-in, inspection, waterproofing, tile, then fit-out and finish.
A cosmetic refresh with no permit — new vanity, new fixtures, paint, same layout — is closer to two weeks in total.
The three things that actually cause delays
Selections made late
Tile has to be on site before tiling starts, and specialty tile can be a three-week lead. A project held up waiting on a decision costs the same as a project held up waiting on an inspector, and it is the only delay that is completely avoidable.
Moving plumbing
Relocating a toilet or a shower drain on a slab means cutting concrete, re-plumbing, inspection, and re-pouring. That is not a day, it is closer to a week of elapsed time, and it triggers the permit if you were not already pulling one. It is also the single biggest driver of cost, not just schedule.
What is behind the wall
Nobody knows until demolition. Rotten framing behind a failed shower pan, a drain line that is not where the drawings said, or old wiring that will not pass inspection all add days. An honest contractor tells you this can happen before you sign rather than presenting it as a surprise on day four.
Can you rush it?
Not the tile. Thinset and grout have cure times, waterproofing membranes have cure times, and a shower that gets used before its waterproofing has fully cured is a shower that fails early. Anyone offering to compress that part of the schedule is offering you a problem in three years.
What you can compress is everything before the first day of work. Have selections finalised and materials delivered before demolition starts and you take real weeks off the calendar.
Living without the bathroom
If it is your only full bath, the honest number is two to five weeks without it, and that should be part of the decision rather than a detail you discover in week two. Plan around it up front.
